John was born in Folkestone England in 1951 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1953. His father’s work as an architect, draughtsman, carpenter and clerk of works took their growing family of eight to many different places throughout New Zealand. This generated John’s fixed and fluid relationship to the land which persists as an overarching influence in his work.
Coming across an abandoned guitar on the roadside near their rural Timaru home in 1965 was one of John’s early encounters with the arts, sparking his talent for writing music. Performance and recording, song writing, drawing and design, architecture, engineering and building, theory of art, photography and graphic design followed, bringing a wealth of experience to his art practice.
Working across a diverse range of media, using sculpture, found objects, painting, print and photography to articulate space, shape and language - in a conceptual framework - John creates abstract works in aluminium, steel and copper, figurative works in wood and stone and methodical, disciplined works in print and paint.
John has exhibited at NZ Sculpture on Shore, Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens and Sanderson Contemporary, with major solo exhibitions at Art Matakana. His work has found corporate and private collectors throughout New Zealand. He is currently assembling a collection of sculptural works for his outdoor artfields project in Warkworth, New Zealand.
